Located in the serene Raa Atoll, Alila Kothaifaru Maldives is setting new standards in sustainable tourism, championing environmental preservation while offering guests an unforgettable island experience. With its lush jungle landscape and vibrant house reef, the resort embraces nature not only as a backdrop but as a core value in its philosophy of responsible luxury.
Architecture in Harmony with Nature
From its inception, Alila Kothaifaru was designed with minimal environmental impact in mind. The island’s villas and facilities are carefully integrated into the natural environment, ensuring that the island’s native flora and fauna remain largely undisturbed. This mindful approach allows guests to feel immersed in the Maldives’ untouched beauty from the moment they arrive.
A Scientific Approach to Coral Restoration
Partnering with Euro-Divers Maldives, the resort has launched a proactive Coral Restoration Program that focuses on restoring reef ecosystems using a resilience-based strategy. Rising sea temperatures and other environmental pressures have threatened coral health across the Maldives, but Alila Kothaifaru is taking steps to reverse the damage.
The multi-phase project includes coral relocation, deployment of reef stars, and the establishment of coral nurseries. By focusing on hardy species like Pocillopora, Acropora, and Montipora, the initiative aims to revive reef complexity and marine biodiversity. Restoration activities are carefully timed with seasonal temperature patterns and use naturally sourced coral fragments to avoid additional ecological stress. Guests and team members are invited to join these efforts, encouraging community-driven conservation.
“As caretakers of this beautiful ecosystem, it’s our duty not just to preserve, but to restore,” said Thomas Weber, General Manager of Alila Kothaifaru Maldives. “Our coral program reflects a hands-on commitment to giving back to the ocean that gives us so much.”
Sustainability Beyond the Shoreline
Beyond marine conservation, Alila Kothaifaru has embedded sustainability into every corner of its operations. To commemorate World Environment Day 2025, the resort shared its latest milestones in waste reduction, clean energy, and circular practices.
Electricity needs are met largely through a robust solar power system, reducing reliance on fossil fuels. Daily operations, including laundry, are scheduled to maximize solar efficiency. The resort uses advanced environmental tools like the Eco Track report to monitor consumption and optimize waste reduction.
Water conservation is also prioritized. Sewage is treated using a Sequencing Batch Reactor (SBR) system and repurposed for irrigation, while an on-site reverse osmosis plant supplies fresh drinking water in reusable glass bottles. Single-use plastics are virtually eliminated, and refillable containers are used for all guest amenities.
The resort has committed to achieving zero landfill waste. Glass is crushed and compacted, food waste is composted into fertilizer, and organic materials are shredded or incinerated responsibly. Linen changes and towel reuse are encouraged through guest education and the resort’s Conserve Program.
A Thoughtful Culinary Experience
Alila Kothaifaru’s food philosophy reflects its environmental values. Sourcing ingredients from local and sustainable suppliers, the resort prioritizes organic, regional produce and responsibly caught seafood. Menus highlight plant-based and plant-forward dishes, encouraging guests to make mindful food choices. Breakfast service blends buffet-style sides with à la carte mains to reduce waste, and portion control is a key part of the kitchen’s sustainability plan.
Cultivating a Culture of Conscious Hospitality
Sustainability at Alila Kothaifaru goes beyond infrastructure—it’s part of the culture. Staff regularly participate in beach clean-ups, tree planting, marine awareness workshops, and environmental training. Guests are encouraged to join, transforming their stay into a meaningful contribution to the planet.
“Sustainability isn’t just a goal—it’s a way of life,” said Resort Manager Jamal Ahmed. “Every initiative, from our coral nursery to composting practices, reflects our shared mission of protecting paradise for generations to come.”

Alila Kothaifaru Maldives invites eco-conscious travelers to enjoy the beauty of the Maldives while supporting planet-positive practices. Whether planting corals, savoring ethical cuisine, or unwinding in a solar-powered villa, guests become part of a movement that respects nature while indulging in its gifts.
